My Story Till Now

Learn, Understand, Change, Adapt

Follow-up week at Sunnaas

Short update from my follow-up week at Sunnaas Hospital, a brief summary of my experiences and lessons learned so far.

August 2025 - Follow-up week at Sunnaas
In August 2025 I was on a follow-up stay at Sunnaas, a week back to a place that is in many ways dear and safe, nice to come back and meet a few familiar people from my first stay in December 2024/ January 2025, and greet familiar and new professionals at the Kress department.

We looked back a little on my goal plan from the first stay and talked about how I had been doing since I returned home, whether the status had changed in what I consider my goal, get back a meaningful life with a good activity balance. The answer to that is as I told them is not a simple answer, but yes from a score of 2 on a scale from 1 to 5, which was where I was 8 months ago, so I am at a small 4 today.

Yes, life has become more meaningful again, but not because the content of my life has changed significantly, some things have come into my life and I am actively working on inventing and doing new things in my life.

But things have improved a lot because I have learned better expectation management, because I am well on my way to accepting my new situation, I have lowered my expectations of myself, so that I more often experience that I succeed in failing, my sense of mastery is growing, I am starting to believe in myself again because I am succeeding with the goals I set for myself, I accept that I have to expect less of myself than I expected before the accident and in the first time after.

Yes, I am well on my way to accepting my situation, and I believe that accepting is important to successfully mastering my situation,
because when you accept, you use your brain on the positive possibilities, you choose to look forward to the new possibilities and stop looking back at the things that were, the rearview mirror tells you what was not what is coming, but looking forward you see challenges and can plan to meet them, if you look back you hit challenges ahead without being prepared with a bang and are often knocked down and spend a lot of negative energy on getting back up, the feeling of mastery becomes negative.

Remember to celebrate the small victories, stand up and cheer, pat yourself on the back, cheer, shout out I have succeeded, be proud of all the small victories that you achieve, a mistake is not a defeat but a lesson, and failing shows that you dare to move forward and that in itself is a victory so cheer even if you fail because you dared.

Yes, I am on my way forward again, a lot because of the competence I have gained at Sunnaas department Kress, because I have chosen to use it, challenge myself, because I want to.

When a serious accident or other health challenges occur, it is common for a number of emotional and mental reactions to follow. The grief over what has been lost, the fear of the future and the uncertainty about the path forward can reduce the quality of life. You can lose energy, experience a lot of stress and feel that you have lost yourself.

Emotional reactions are normal, I have learned, but dealing with them and the mental reactions is a demanding process both for myself, but also for my relatives, through self-care and self-management I am well on my way to regaining a better quality of life and a meaningful life again.

Mental training is important in such a situation, finding the things that provide positive mental replenishment becomes extremely important when you are going through a tough period in life, it is then extra important to focus on the people and things that provide positive replenishment and distance yourself from it and those who do not.
I have learned about how I can balance my everyday life, that brain fatigue means that I have to portion my everyday life in a better way so that I have surplus for the things that need to be done, get better to take a break, use meditation, breathing technique and or similar so that the brain can rest, avoid empty my energi completely, say stop, and take timeouts.

Accept that it is normal to experience a range of different emotions. Grief over loss can take hold as a deep longing for what once was, while fear of the future can create stress and anxiety. Insecurity about one's own worth can lead to a feeling of helplessness, and one's self-image can be poor.

I have learned that it is important to:

What's next for me ?

Now I move on to the next phase in my life, I'm going to Camp MTB Adapt with the Sunnaas Foundation, and Brain camp in the fall of 2025. To continue building a sense of mastery, to continue learning, I choose to move forward.

I can because I want to.

I will continue to update on my progress, so stop by from time to time if you would like to follow me on my journey.
